Legionella Risk Assessment
There are over 50 species of Legionella which is the cause of the deadly Legionnaires' disease, one of the fatal forms of pneumonia. Although Legionella is widespread in natural water sources such as lakes, rivers, it can also live in man-made systems such as water storage units, bathrooms, and kitchens posing a great health hazard if it goes undetected.
People are often infected by Legionella on breathing in minuscule droplets of water that have been sprayed into the air. The water droplets will contain Legionella bacteria that have grown in an environment of between 20 degrees to 45 degrees centigrade. Temperatures higher than 60 degrees will normally kill the bacteria.
The Legionella bacteria grows naturally in the environment in ponds, lakes and rivers, so it is very hard to eradicate it totally and stop it entering our own water and sewage systems as they are closely connected.
Small numbers of Legionella bacteria are generally not a threat to humans, but in a nurturing environment of the correct temperature, Legionella can explode into growth creating a slimy biofilm sticking to the surface of piping that has slow moving water or still water.
