It’s March – time for your workplace wellbeing spring clean!

Wow, it’s been a long, hard winter…but now that sun’s started to shine through the windows (a bit!) it can highlight a few areas of your workplace where a spring clean is in order.

One of these – although it might not be as obvious as dusty corners – is workplace wellbeing. Employers have a legal responsibility to maintain the health and safety of staff, customers and visitors, and now’s a great time to get to grips with any outstanding tasks.

Did you know: The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) says the cost of workplace injuries and illness in the UK is a whopping £1.8 MILLION every month.

And that’s not counting the sheer misery, worry and pain for all those who suffer accidents or sickness that could be prevented…

Don’t let it be you, your staff or your customers. Check out our Bison Assist H&S Spring Clean Top Tips and get set for a healthy, happy Spring and Summer for everyone!

  1. Turn your team into risk spotters. Health and safety – yawn, right? Wrong! Anyone can get hurt or ill at work, and no-one wants that. So reward and recognise members of your team who flag up any potential risks they see; they’re your Health & Safety Heroes!

  1. Keep clutter to a minimum. Where waste builds up, it can become a fire hazard. Make sure it’s safely disposed of in the right place.
  2. Get your head out of the sand. It’s no good ignoring health and safety legislation, even though you are busy; failing to comply can cost your organisation a fortune in compensation, legal costs and – of course – personal injury. But complying needn’t be difficult or time-consuming if you get expert help.

  1. Yuk – clean out that office fridge! Shared facilities often become a bit grim because no-one takes responsibility. Don’t let furry yoghurts, out of date sandwiches and dodgy milk have shelf space in your workplace fridge – be the one who dares to clear them out.
  2. Get your risk assessments up to date. Ranging from Legionella to fire, health & safety and disabled access, this is not only a legal obligation but is absolutely the best way to protect the wellness of everyone who uses your premises. And the good news is, you can schedule all of your annual risk assessments in one go, ahead of the due-by date.

  1. Stop the slips and trips. If you see areas that regularly get wet, such as entrances or toilet floors, make sure there’s a go-to person to get them mopped – and go to them whenever you need to.
  1. Get your colleagues talking about health and safety. Training is a great way to make sure everyone understands where the dangerous risks lie – and keeps your responsible team members up to speed.

  1. Be a good friend at work. Mental wellbeing is a major priority in any workplace, and sometimes people need to talk. Be sure to take note if a colleague is looking sad, tired or stressed, and take a moment to ask how they are.
  1. Help anyone who’s struggling to get around. Providing good access is a legal responsibility for workplaces, but sometimes obstacles get overlooked. As a person using the workplace, you are in a unique position to notice anyone having difficulties and help put in place the measures that will help them.
  1. Make health & safety fun. Think that’s a tall order? No way! Follow Bison Assist on LinkedIn for quizzes, tips and easy-to-enter competitions everyone can enter to win great prizes!
