Wellbeing at Work (World Mental Health Day)
Wellbeing at work is something that means a lot to us at Bison Assist – so on World Mental Health Day (October 10) we want to share some useful tips we’ve picked up from the most people-friendly workplaces we visit.
As you know, our Bison experts call on clients regularly to make sure their risk assessments are up to date. And because we also provide help and advice outside those times, we really feel like part of the team!
By complying with the law on fire risk, legionella and access, these responsible workplaces are already doing a fantastic job looking after the health and safety of their staff and customers – give us a shout at Bison to make sure all’s up to scratch for your people.
You can also follow these 6 real-life tips we’ve seen in action on our visits, to help encourage wellness at work and encourage good mental health:
- Make sure everyone takes a lunch break – and if they can go outside, it’s even better.
- Watch out for people working too-long hours; they might need help adjusting their workload or the way they go about things, and training could be required.
- Help people keep working time and home time separate. Keep out of hours calls or emails to a minimum to give them space to relax properly.
- Make sure everyone feels able to ask for help, and knows who they can turn to for support.
- Be sure to listen: managers and staff should always take the time to take an interest in their colleagues, and ask regularly about how they are feeling.
- Make time for fun in your workplace. Everyone is busy, but team activities such as a quiz or a fundraising event can help you build a supportive and friendly team.
Why does mental health matter at work?
Happy, healthy people who feel like valued members of your team can do their jobs well, look after each other and build a friendly workplace. They’re more likely to stay, too, which saves problems with recruitment and staffing. It’s a real win-win!
So on World Mental Health Day, all of us here at Bison Assist would like to wish you and your team good mental health – it’s one of the most important things you can achieve.
